Microsoft Announces Office 2013 Suite For Windows 8

Microsoft has announced Office 2013 for Windows 8. The new software suite has been designed to work with touch-based devices, styluses, as well as keyboards with ease, and will support social networking as well. Windows RT tablet users will get access to the Office Home and Student 2013 RT editions that offer theWord, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote applications. The suite will work with ARM-based Windows 8 devices, which includes Microsoft Surface. The touch-friendly nature of the new applications is best seen in the Read Mode feature in Word, which automatically adjusts the text size and layout based on the screen size, as well as allowing you to watch videos embedded in documents, while turning through the pages like you would with a book.

However, the most significant feature in Office 2013 it its cloud-based nature, transitioning from being just a software to a service. Since all documents are saved to SkyDrive by default, you can access them across gadgets. The same goes for your software settings, custom dictionaries, and so on — they too are carried over to all the gadgets you use. You can even access your documents from a PC that you don't normally use (such as in a cybercafé), since both the software and the data are stored online. Of course, this implies that you will have to be connected to the internet at all times, which is not the case with many Indian tech users.

The new application comes with a service called Yammer, which lets you share files and network with your business contacts in a secure way. Other social aspects of the software are manifested in how your contacts are displayed through a new feature called the People Card, which is a central location for displaying profile pictures, contact information, status updates, and activity feeds for your contacts, directly streamed in through their Facebook or LinkedIn accounts. Finally, the software features full integration with Skype, going so far as to provide 60 minutes of Skype time every month for premium users.

The complete list of Office suite applications and their pricing details has not been announced yet. However, the cost will be a monthly \ annual subscription fee rather than a one-time payment, considering Microsoft's shift to the "service" model. While the Office Home and Student editions mentioned above will be either free or require a single payment, its subscription-based editions are as follows:

Office 365 Home Premium - A package for home users, it comes with 20 GB SkyDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype minutes per month.

Office 365 Small Business Premium - Created for small businesses, it features business-grade email, shared calendars, website tools and HD web conferencing.

Office 365 ProPlus: Made for enterprise users who require advanced business features, this version seems like it will be entirely cloud-based.

For now, you can test drive the consumer preview version here. The most controversial point, at least for countries where internet penetration and access speeds are low, is the software's cloud-based nature. Karbonn Mobiles Will Launch Special Edition Rajinikanth-Autographed Handsets In September

Ask any true Kollywood fan, and anything even remotelyassociated with Rajinikanth creates a frantic buzz. Karbonn Mobilesprobably understands the Rajini phenomenon well, as it has collaborated with Eros and Mediaone to create special-edition phones and tablets to coincide with the launch of his upcoming movie Kochadaiyaan. You can expect the phones and tablets to be rolled out by September, as the movie's music is supposed to launch in October. For the ill-informed amongst us, Kochadaiyan Ranadhiran was one of the most powerful kings of the the Pandyan dynasty. The movie will be made using 3D and motion capture technologies, and will see actress Deepika Padukone in the lead role alongside Rajinikanth. Let the Rajini-smartphone jokes begin!

Zuckerberg shoots down Facebook phone rumours

 Over the past couple of months, there have been some rumours doing the rounds about Facebook launching their own mobile phone. However, CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently shot down these rumours, stating that they are not building a whole phone but are instead aiming at supporting an ecosystem that can help apps build on Facebook.

During the company’s earning call, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said, “We will develop new products, particularly in mobile.” This statement came amidst a list of other product and revenue plans, a report by ABC news reads. The report went on to state that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg started to discuss about mobile app products and he said, “We want to support an ecosystem where other apps can build on top of Facebook.” He also addressed the rumours surrounding the Facebook smartphone and said, “There are a lot of things you can build in other operating systems as well that aren’t really taking, that aren’t really like building out a whole phone, which wouldn’t make much sense for us to do.”

Facebook to build mobile products not smartphones

However, though it appears that the rumours seem to be have been shot down for now, there is no telling if they can be true and Facebook could, in fact, launch a smartphone of their own by mid of next year. 

Reports earlier claimed that Facebook had tied-up with HTC to build a phone that could be launched by the middle of the next year. "These plans haven’t been made public but the phone was intended to be released this year. It appears that HTC is now being given more time on product development; hence the date of launch has been pushed back," the report reads.

The report went on to add that Facebook was not publicizing the smartphone project; it was codenamed "Buffy". "Everything is being kept under wraps and it is speculated that Facebook is "going door-to-door to find the right talent for the project". The news about Project Buffy surfaced last year, when reports came in stating that Facebook was planning to launch a smartphone with social networking at its core, and not merely a handset with a dedicated Facebook button, as found on the HTC ChaCha. Following the acquiring of Instagram, Facebook recently announced the Facebook Camera, which in retrospect, appears to be the brand's attempt at paving the way for a heavily customized camera app for smartphones."

As of now, there is absolutely no word available on the specifications of this mythical Facebook phone and the only shred of information available regarding it is that it will run on the Android operating system. 

The number of users accessing Facebook on their mobile phones and smartphones has surpassed those who access it on their computers. This trend, however, has gained momentum only over the last couple of years, especially since smartphones featuring a dedicated Facebook app came into the picture. These allowed one to easily access the social networking site on-the-go with all the possible features neatly packed into what most would consider a user-friendly app.

Facebook has already made a few attempts to introduce a social networking-friendly handset in the past and tied up with a few companies like HTC to develop and release "Facebook Phones". Devices like the Android-powered HTC Salsa and HTC ChaCha didn't quite receive as much success as hoped and so it was back to the drawing board.

Microsoft Surface hitting shelves on October 26, 2012

 Microsoft fans have been eagerly awaiting the launch of the Surface tablet, and this bit of news will certainly come as a great piece of information for those waiting to snag this tablet. It has now come to light that the Surface tablets will be available from October 26, 2012.




As per a report by CNET, Microsoft, in their annual report, which they filed this week with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, stated, “The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices.” Microsoft recently announced that the Windows 8 OS will be available on October 26, 2012, which is the same date the Surface tablet is expected to be released.

Launch date revealed

A hot topic surrounding the Microsoft Surface is its price. A recent listing portrayed the price of the top-of-the-line Surface as approximately $2,150, which translates to roughly Rs. 1,20,000. However, the website has since put up a disclaimer stating that those were not the official prices given by Microsoft, and that the brand has not informed them regarding the prices of any of the Surface tablets.


The Microsoft Surface tablets will be available in two types: one is a budget-friendly version and will feature Windows RT running on ARM chipsets, and the other version is the Windows 8 Pro tablet running on Ivy Bridge processors and expected to be priced similarly to Ultrabooks. In a statement regarding the pricing of the tablets, Microsoft said, “Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC.”

AMD Radeon HD 7990 6GB enroute, 6 display outputs onboard

 
We expected AMD’s HD 7990 to show up at Computex this year, but we had no luck. A dual-GPU card from AMD was inevitable, as they, just like Nvidia, always have a dual-GPU graphics card that is usually the fusion of two of their highest-end GPU cores linked by CrossFire on a single PCB. The board is codenamed “New Zealand” and according to VR-Zone, AMD has now informed their board partners that the card will be arriving sometime in late August, at the earliest. The new reference PCB design will have a slightly different power system as well.

It's coming...

Rather than just slapping on two eight-pin power connectors, AMD will be using four six-pin power connectors. These four separate power connectors will give the card a unique multiphase power system that's essentially divided into three groups. One of the groups involves delivering power to the two cores, while the third group will deliver power to the PLX connector, which connects the two cores. Whether this solution is enough to offer a competitive edge over the GTX 690 is yet to be seen. Other than the power system, the card will also have support for six displays out-of-the box. These include two DVI ports along with four miniDP ports.

Back in May, we heard rumours about board partners taking matters into their own hands and planning on launching dual-GPU solutions of their own that would bear the ‘X2’ moniker. However, this didn’t exactly happen. We guess manufacturers are busy waiting for the reference design from AMD itself, which should be heading their way towards the end of August. The card will go head on with the GTX 690, which is currently the fastest graphics card in the world. In order to take them down, AMD will have to bring their A-Game, not only in hardware but software as well. Drivers have always been a weak point for AMD and although they’ve improved over the years, Nvidia has always had an upper hand in this department. The company does deliver really good hardware, but that’s only half the story as drivers can just as easily make or break any hardware.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 release date pushed back to 2013

 The release date of the latest game in the Sniper series - Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 - for India has been pushed back. Originally slated to be released in India on October 9, 2012, India will see the game hitting shelves only on January 15, 2013.

Sniper 2 is said to have very diverse gameplay. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 takes all the breathless anticipation, precise controls and skillful fun of sniping and mixes it with stealth gameplay. The game rewards skilled gameplay and difficult shots with a bullet cam for critical hits, such as head shots. The game shows your kill in excruciating amounts of detail. The game has variety in levels. Some of the varied locations include jungles, mountains and urban levels. All the environments of the game are based on real world location.

Hide in the bushes and shoot stuff... next year

The game has realistic ballistics that take into account the player’s location, wind speed and direction, breathing rate and distance from the target. Working with spotters is the key difference between life and death. There are night vision and thermal vision goggles to use in situations with limited visibility. Makers of non-Android phones such as BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion and Nokia, the latter having bet its future on Microsoft Windows software, will be able to use a software developer kit from Nuance to make their own versions. 

The new Swype platform will learn from user behaviour, adding words entered by the user via the keyboard to a personal dictionary. This dictionary will then be deployed across the spectrum of input types, which includes tracing the shapes of words, and handwriting. Nuance's public dictionary currently holds 300,000 words in English and supports 50 languages for text and 35 for voice.

How to: 6 cool things to do with your old computer

  We’ve all cycled through PCs and notebooks and there always comes a time when you can’t upgrade your PC any more, or even sell it. The only option left is to sell it off as scrap or let it lie around gathering dust. However, there are a number of things that you can do with your old PC by just installing a bunch of software on it. Here are a few of our suggestions.

As a Home Theatre PC

We’ve already spoken of this in the past. One of the easiest things to do with an old PC or notebook is to use it as an HTPC. All you need to do is connect it to a TV or a large screen using a connector -preferably HDMI - or any other option available. 

Your old PC - your home entertainment playback system

Once you’ve done that, all you need to do is install a free HTPC software called XBMC. The software has a simple user interface, similar to those found on media players and consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The software also supports Android remote controls apps and DLNA, so you can even stream media from one PC to another over the network. XBMC is available for Windows, Linux, OS X and even as a liveCD called XBMbuntu.

As a remote torrent downloader

Many of us download torrents. It’s one of the most convenient ways to download content off the web without much trouble. There are many different clients available for different platforms. uTorrent is one of the most popular torrent clients available for Windows. The program is tiny and runs in the background, consuming close to no resources at all. With an old, low-power PC, you can have it downloading data all the time. You can even remotely control it over your network or even over the Internet on your mobile phone. 

Remotely control torrent downloads

To do this, download and install uTorrent and then enable the WebUI component from the Preferences menu. Now, create a scheduled task in Windows that forces uTorrent to load in the background without having to log in. This way, uTorrent always runs in the background without you having to manually start it. Also, set a download folder in uTorrent so newly-added torrents download directly to that folder. Subsequently, register for a free domain service such as DDNS so accessing your PC is easier. Now, with webUI enabled, you can access the uTorrent interface on a PC, notebook, tablet or even your phone. Remember to look out for free uTorrent apps for your mobile platform. If you prefer using Linux, there are other alternatives such as rTorrent andTransmission.

As a NAS device at home

Our homes are increasingly connected these days .Every device seems to have some kind of network connectivity option. People these days use one or two PCs, a notebook, a smartphone, and sometimes, even a tablet. There’s a lot of data that transferred around and it’s ideal to have a single server that takes care of all your data needs. 

You can use one of your existing PCs or notebooks and attach a large enough hard drive to it, say 1 or 2 TB, depending on your requirements. If you’re going to be streaming movies and music, you’d need this kind of space. For photos and documents, even a 500 GB hard drive may be more than sufficient. In the case of a notebook, you can simply use an external hard drive. In the case of a PC, an internal hard drive is the more economical option available.

While it’s possible to enable file sharing on Windows or Linux, it’s better to use more specialised software. FreeNAS is a specialised NAS server software that is basically a very light-weight operating system; it is just a 96 MB download. You can configure the server via the software using a web interface, remotely. You won’t even need to use a monitor to use the server. All you do is burn the image on a disc and install it on your PC or notebook. The software supports pretty much every popular file system out there. You can use this network server to stream movies to your HTPC or even as a full-fledged data server.

Set up a full-fledged web server

If you’ve always wanted to host your own site, you can do it using a simple web server, but there are other environments such as MySQL and Perl that are required to make it all come together. You also need a relatively fast internet connection with decent upload speeds. Fortunately, instead of having to install and configure each aspect of a web server manually, there are easy solutions available in the form of LAMP or WAMP servers. They’re basically a package of web server software with all the additional components pre-configured. 

Setup your own little web site

One of the popular WAMP servers for Windows is called, well, WampServer, and it’s available for download free of cost. WampServer gives you an infinite number of possibilities once you have it installed. There are packages for setting up a web site, for setting up galleries and even forums, available for download. Most of these are free and you’d usually have to pay for them if you were to use the server, but with your own infrastructure setup, running a site is completely free.

As a PBX board

While most of the solutions we’ve spoken of so far are free, setting up a PBX (private branch exchange) board isn’t. A PBX basically allows you to set up a voice communication system within your office. This isn’t useful for regular home users, but SoHo users will find this extremely handy. Other than the hardware, there’s no real expense whatsoever. 

Using your old PC as a voice-comm server

The first thing to do is install the hardware components in your PC. Then, you can install Asterisk, a popular, free PBX software as a package on your Linux operating system, or even the entire software using a distribution called AsteriskNOW that’s available on the Asterisk site. Once set up, you'll be able to make phone calls using just a few lines and even receive calls from outside via a voice-guided system. There's also the potential to use VoIP to make calls over the web.

As a retro gaming console

If you’re using an old notebook or PC, one of the fun things you could do is to actually install a game emulator of your choice on it. This will let you play games from your/your father's childhood on your TV. These titles have very low system requirements, so emulators will run on pretty much any hardware. You can then delete any accounts you have on Windows except for one so Windows directly boots to the desktop.

Simply create a shortcut to the emulator in the Windows Startup folder. This way, Windows will load up directly into the emulator. It’s also advisable to install two game consoles so two users can game on the PC connected to a large monitor or TV. ZSNES, for example is a popular emulator for Super Nintendo titles. There are similar titles for the Nintendo 64 and the first Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

The former supports 12 different card formats, while the USB hub offers four USB 2.0 ports. The devices come in bright red and blue colours and simple but elegant shapes. The card reader is a USB 2.0 device capable of reading the following storage card types: SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus, MS, MS Pro, MS Pro Duo, xD, CF, M2, microSD, and microSDHC. It comes with a retractable USB cable and claims a reliability of up to 10,000 read \ write operations. Its dimensions are 2.1" (w) x 2.1" (d) x 0.6"  (14.9 mm) (h), weighing just 28 grammes.

Coming to the hub, it features four USB 2.0 ports that allow you to connect additional devices, while using only one slot in the PC. However, keep in mind that since it does not have an external supply, it cannot support power-hungry devices such as external hard drives. IOC Asks Olympics Fans In London To Stop Tweeting Excessively

Sports fans attending the London Olympics have been asked to avoid unnecessary text messages and tweets during events to prevent an overload of the data networks, which affects television coverage. Commentators in Saturday's men's cycling road race were unable to tell viewers how far the leaders were ahead of the pack, because data could not get through from the GPS tracking systems installed on the cycles. Many inadvertently made matters worse by venting their anger on Twitter at the lack of information, further straining the infrastructure.

An International Olympic Committee (IOC) spokesman said the network problem had been caused by the messages sent by the hundreds of thousands of fans who lined the streets to cheer on the British team. "Of course, if you want to send something, we are not going to say 'Don't, you can't do it', and we would certainly never prevent people", he said. "It's just - if it's not an urgent, urgent one, please kind of take it easy". Other events due to take place on London's roads include the men's and women's marathon and triathlon.

An explosion in the use of mobile phones to access the internet and share photos and videos has madeLondon 2012 the first true "social media games", but also placed immense pressure on data networks. Mobile operators and infrastructure companies had said that they expected to be able to meet the extra demand, but obviously these events have shown otherwise.

The IOC spokesman added that it appeared the problem lay with oversubscription on one particular unnamed network, and talks had taken place in an attempt to share more of the data load. He conceded that asking people not to send messages at key moments "may not have an awful lot of effect".

It stands for vertical tap.It provides vertical spaces but in the output window there will be no any difference as \v is only applicable at the time of printing.

How to make 3D glasses for Rs.10

 There are tons of anaglyph 3D videos and images available on the Internet. Sadly though, you need equipment to watch all of this. Fear not now, as with household equipment, ten bucks and close to ten minutes of your time (depending on your craft skills), you can create the cheapest 3D glasses for your 3D viewing pleasure. Let’s quickly get started...

Step 1: Things you need:

• Cardboard
• Chart paper
• Red Cellophane paper
• Blue Cellophane paper
• Cutter, Glue, Scissors

Step 2: Draw your own design that you would want to see in your 3D glasses. If you’re lazy and uninspired, cut out the sample design given in the image.

Step 3: Stick that design on to your cardboard and cut it out so that you have a sturdy frame. 

Step 4: Ensure that the eyeholes and the area for the nose are properly cut. You don’t want your skin to get sore, or the cardboard to block your visibility.

Cut out the sides in a similar way.

Step 5: Cut out the red cellophane and blue cellophane paper and stick them on the front of the glasses. Be sure to remember that the red needs to go on the left and the blue needs to go on the right. 

Step 6: Voila! Your 3D glasses are ready! All it took us was close to twenty minutes to get the whole experiment done. As you can see, our craft skills do leave a lot to be desired but hey, if you do manage to conjure something better, post it out here for the tech world to see!
