In an unprecedented move, Unites States Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski has released a proposal for a formal research on whether the current radiation standards for cell phones pose any kind of carcinogenic risk to humans, for the first time in the last 15 years.
The investigation proposal will only move forward once FCC’s other four commissioner give a green signal, which should be the case. The existing cellular radiations guidelines were examined last in 1996 and the regulations set. At that point only 44 million used mobile phones which were a small fraction of the total population but today at 332 million, it’s almost the entire population of the US that uses cell phones.
Though, FCC is confident that their guidelines are totally safe even today, they would like to understand whether their guidelines for children below 15 needs any changes. There have been numerous independent studies conducted which suggest that there might be a link between wireless radiation and brain tumor. But none have been able to prove a connection between the two with any conclusive evidence.
FCC maintains that the investigation they have initiated has nothing to do with the independent researches and is a standard timely review of their guidelines. We hope that, FCC guidelines indeed hold good, else there might be a lot of repercussions of the same worldwide. I’m already thinking of adopting an earphones only calls starting today.
