Rumour: Nokia Is Working On Six Windows Phone 8 Devices

Posted on 05:42 by Unknown

A document that allegedly lists Nokia's Windows Phone roadmap has been leaked by  Chinese website WPDang.com. It looks like the data has been extracted from some WP device database.
Some of the gadgets listed in the table include code names such asNokia Phi, Fluid, and Dogphone. The list also includes the Samsung SGH-I687 and Juggernaut Alpha, which are certain to be renamed whenever an official announcement is made.

Rumour: Nokia Is Working On Six Windows Phone 8 Devices

As pointed out by PhoneArena.com, the Nokia P4301 might be a codename for the PureView technologythat is currently being ported to WP8. What catches my attention here though is the Juggernaut Alpha, which sounds like an early build version of a flagship WP device. That's a pretty cool name for a phone too. Having said that, considering that we do not have any information on the device specs apart from model codenames, there's not much to be excited about over this leak, even assuming it's genuine.

Nokia Lumia 610 With Windows Phone 7.5 And 3.7" Screen Launched For Rs 13,000

Posted on 05:36 by Unknown

Nokia Lumia 610 With Windows Phone 7.5 And 3.7" Screen Launched For Rs 13,000Nokia has launched the Lumia 610, its lowest-priced Windows Phone 7.5 device, in India. Expectedly, this smartphone has lowered specs of an 800 MHz CPU and 256 MB RAM to achieve the target price. However, the other specifications have been maintained at the standard WP7.5 requirement levels, with a 3.7" multi-touch capacitive screen having pixel dimensions of 800x480, 5 mp autofocus camera with LED flash, and 8 GB internal storage.
As expected, there is no expandable microSD slot. The phone also supports the Wi-Fi hotspot feature for as many as five users at a time. The Lumia 610 carries an MRP of Rs 13,000, which isn't great value considering its compromised specs.

At the same event, Nokia also announced a Dark Knight Rises Limited Edition version of the Lumia 800. It plans to sell 200 pieces of this smartphone in India, although the pricing has not been announced as yet.

First Impressions — Windows 8 For Tablets

Posted on 05:35 by Unknown

As you may already know, Windows 8 is designed to work on desktops as well as tablets. The Release Preview was launched last month and showcases the new Metro UI that's the USP of the upcoming OS. I had a chance to sample the platform briefly at theTechEd Europe 2012 event last week. Here are my first impressions about the performance and user experience of the tablet-optimised OS.

Smooth And Easy Interface - When it was time to discard my old QWERTY smartphone, I was a little wary of switching to a totally touch-based interface. Those apprehensions were laid to rest when I finally got to use the iPhone and iPad. In the same way, Windows 8 also does a fairly good job at simplifying how we use portable computers. It is as smooth, if not smoother than iOS.
Similar To Windows Phone - For starters, the OS is very fluid and almost lag-free. Of course, things may change as you install more applications, but that's the case with most other operating systems as well. The Start screen, just like in Windows Phone, can be considered the same as the Start menu inWindows 7 — albeit with a lot more information being displayed in real-time, such as Facebook, email, weather, and stock updates in their respective tiles. You can access just about everything you need on this screen, with live tiles dedicated for various applications.
Start Screen May Get Cluttered - On the downside, the Start screen will get cluttered as you keep installing more apps, until you will have to scroll right to find the app you want. Even with the pinch gestures to zoom in and out, this can get irritating and inconvenient when the number of apps grows beyond a certain limit. A similar approach to iOS, where you can swipe between screens, would have been better.
Backward Compatible - In case you're still yearning for the old Windows 7 desktop, you can simply click on a tile on the bottom-left corner to switch to the classic desktop, then use the on-screen keyboard to go about your regular tasks.
Ergonomic Design - Most touch gestures have been designed taking into account the way the tablet will be held by the user. Hence, there are quite a few gestures that will have you swiping near the edges of the screen. From what I have seen, it will be a smooth transition to the new OS when it will become available later this year.

A Fresh, Clean, And Snappy Experience - The bottomline is that Windows 8 is a new OS, built from the ground up with a clean interface that feels fresh and is also snappy to boot. A more detailed look will have to wait until we actually get our hands on a review unit.

New Android Spam Malware Sneaks In Via Yahoo! Mail

Posted on 05:33 by Unknown

New Android Spam Malware Sneaks In Via Yahoo! MailThe Android platform has seen its share of malware attacks. Many unsuspecting users have fallen prey to inflated mobile bills, courtesy of outgoing SMSs and calls. However, SophosLabs has uncovered a new spam botnet that aims to monetize mobile malware, reportedly by exploiting Yahoo! Mail's Android app.

Naked Security adds, "The messages appear to originate from compromised Google Android smartphones or tablets. All of the samples at SophosLabs have been sent through Yahoo!'s free mail service and contain correct headers and DKIM signatures".
Apparently some images in this spam message that ends with the footer, "Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android" also have animated images, which inflate your data usage charges.
Initially, it was not clear whether this malware originated via infected Android devices, or from Yahoo! Mail's servers. However, in a new update, SophosLabs has clarified that the images have not been forged, as it was believed earlier. However, the origin of the malware is yet to be ascertained.
The post explains, "We either have a new PC botnet that is exploiting Yahoo!'s Android APIs or we have mobile phones with some sort of malware that uses the Yahoo! APIs for sending spam messages". It further states, "One strike against the theory is that the accounts used to send the spam appear to be randomly generated, not like the messages are being sent using victim Yahoo! accounts. The other strike is the total absence of malware using the Yahoo! Android API for either platform. Until we find a sample targeting Windows, Mac or mobile phones, it will remain a mystery. I'm sure the mystery will be solved, but we don't know the answer right now".
Microsoft's Terry Zink hints on his blog that the bot indeed originated via infected Android devices. He adds, "The reason these messages appear to come from Android devices is because they did come from Android devices".
Google, has issued a statement that says, "The evidence we’ve examined does not support the Android botnet claim. Our analysis so far suggests that spammers are using infected computers and a fake mobile signature to try to bypass anti-spam mechanisms in the email platform they’re using. We’re continuing to investigate the details".
Whatever be the case, till experts figure out how this bot operates and where exactly it originated from, users are advised to install apps from trusted sources only.
